Religion and ethics

NSW public schools offer special religious education and special education in ethics, delivered by approved providers wherever available.

During enrolment, you can choose a special religious education option for your child from the school’s available approved providers. You can withdraw your child from special religious education by selecting alternative meaningful activities, or special education in ethics if it’s available.

You can update your preference by writing to the school or through the online form available at participating schools.

Visit the department’s website for more information about religion and ethics.

Special Religious Education

Special Religious Education

At Lindsay Park Public School, a half hour Special Religious Education (SRE) class is offered to students. Years K-2 attend their lesson from 9:00-9:30am, Years 3-4 from 10:00-10:30am and Years 5-6 from 10:30-11:00am on Tuesdays.

We provide the following SRE classes: Catholic and Protestant. Each teacher of Special Religious Education is authorised by the approved provider.

The approved provider for Catholic SRE is the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine – Diocese of Wollongong. The SRE Curriculum is available at https://www.ccdwollongong.com/what-is-sre

The approved provider for Protestant SRE is the Uniting Church in Australia – Synod of NSW & ACT. The SRE Curriculum is available at https://whysre.com.au/

Combined scripture services are held at Easter and Christmas.

Students who do not attend SRE participate in alternative meaningful activities. Exemption from attendance is obtained by parent’s written request.

Ethics

Ethics

Ethics class will be available at Lindsay Park Public School from term 2. At this stage we will offer Ethics for children in year 5 / year 6. Ethics classes run in the SRE/SEE timeslot each week – on Tuesdays at out school:

10:30-11:00 for Year 5, Year 6

Please contact our school office if you are interested in your child attending year 5 / year 6 ethics class.

In ethics, students explore everyday issues suitable for their age. They learn to listen closely to each other, to disagree without putdowns and to think carefully as they form their opinions. Classes are free and are run by specially trained Primary Ethics volunteers, who are often parents and grandparents.

Ethics teachers present stories and questions that encourage children to consider what they would do – and what they ought to do – in that situation. The teachers don’t give their own opinions – they help the children to discuss amongst themselves issues such as:

·         Is it important to tell people when you disagree with them?

·         What makes a good friend?

·         Is it ever okay to break a promise?

·         What counts as teasing and is it ever okay?

You can find more information about the Primary Ethics curriculum here.

Primary Ethics always needs more volunteer ethics teachers so that all parents have the option of choosing ethics classes for their child. Contact Feyza on Feyza.tuncay@primaryethics.com.au if you’re curious about volunteering.
